Cancel or Compromise?

Last month, April 2026, I had a show at Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant in Buckhead. It was for MOD SQUAD, a group of businesses with services aimed at property owners. The day before, a misunderstanding was discovered about WHEN I would be performing based around food service. This was a weekday luncheon and many of the 50+ property owners in attendance still had to go back to work. As interactive as my show is, I didn’t want to interrupt people eating. Food gets cold and the lunch was the main attraction.

Before discussing with the client, I went on to several magician-only Facebook groups for advise. It was an interesting conversation to say the least. What did most performers suggest? Read on.

In the end, the wonderful host Melanie and I worked out a compromise and the show would be on. Here’s what happened.

I did 12 minutes during appetizers and salads, rearranging my show so that the routines required nobody to get out of their seat. Then I took a break while the main course was served. During dessert I came back and did another 31 minutes. (One tiny mistake with my Rubiks cube, but I was able to successfully conclude that routine. THAT was a close one!) The host was extremely happy. I apologized for the misunderstanding and she said it was perfectly fine and wanted me to package my info so she could send it to the attendees. Many online magicians on Facebook told me to cancel the show. Don’t fight for attention when there’s food in front of somebody. I agree.

But…

Never cancel the show the day before. Explain the conditions as best you can and find a compromise.
